Cumbria fly fishing June Newsletter

A month of mixed weather with heavy showers once more with over half of May just unfishable due to the high water levels, last week there was two months rain in one day which caused a serious flood on the Eden. There was a salmon caught under the power lines June 1st and a few seen moving through on this dropping and clearing water. Conditions should be good for the beginning of June looking at the forecast, so hopefully we can make a start especially for the trout and sea trout where the water just hasn’t been quite right yet. It is also the month where we get some of the larger fish return along with the sea trout. There has been a lot of debate about the decreasing numbers of salmon entering UK rivers of late, (they have also been classed as an endangered species now), when you consider how many trawlers are fishing around our coast and the by-catch of adult salmon and smolts while fishing for mackerel etc, it is no wonder. During the first year of Covid when the trawlers were furloughed, there were enormous numbers of fish all over the UK in the rivers, no coincidence. One positive from that is that would have been a good spawning year and it will be next year for the return of those adult fish. Give Beaumont a go on the Willow Bed when the water is below .8m, no need to wade the top part.

Please find attached the tide times for June.
